Art Field Trips

It is my vision to broaden the scope of the elementary students’ visual art experience in the Wellesley Public Schools by fostering a rich relationship between school art and museum art. Looking at art and discussing artwork aids in the development of critical thinking and communication skills. Additionally, viewing art in a museum cannot truly be emulated in the art room. I’m passionate about the positive impact art field trips have on the learner. The field trip locations I select always connect to the K-5 Core curriculum. Providing many and varied experiences give students a broader understanding of curriculum topics as well as art concepts. This page provides some examples of field trips my students have experienced.

4th Grade Trip to The Davis Museum, Wellesley

Interdisciplinary Connection: Visual Art & Social Studies

The field trip is designed for students to learn about the United States regions through visual art. Bringing students to the Davis museum to view a variety of U.S. landscape paintings will reinforces understanding of the geography and culture of the different regions of the United States. In addition, students have the opportunity to improve critical thinking skills as they are challenged to observe, analyze, interpret and reflect upon each piece of artwork.

3rd Grade Trip to American Art Collection at MFA, Boston

Interdisciplinary Connections: Visual Arts & Social Studies

This field trip is designed for students to learn about the painting, sculpture and decorative arts created in Boston and surrounding neighborhoods during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Bringing students into the museum to view and explore these primary source objects helps student gain a better understanding of colonial Boston and its development as a major cultural center. The Museum of Fine Arts Early American Art collection ranks among the best of its type in the world.

2nd Grade Trip to The deCordova Sculpture Park, Lincoln

Interdisciplinary Connection: Visual Arts & Science

The field trip is designed for students to make connections between the 2nd grade science unit, Structures, and the element of art, form. This educational experience helps students synthesize knowledge from multiple disciplines and discover relationships between art and science. Students will explore the concept of structure as an art form in art class. At the museum, students will observe sculptures created by a variety of artists who implemented different strategies for achieving balance. Students will gain a deeper understanding of stability, strength, compression and tension upon investigating the large - scale sculptures at the DeCordova Sculpture Park.

5th Grade Field Trip to Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Interdisciplinary Connection: Visual Arts & Social Studies

This field trip was designed for 5th grade students to experience the art and artifacts at the MFA from Ancient Egypt and Ancient China. This directly connected to the what the students were learning in their social studies curriculum. *Please note that this specific trip no longer happens due to the change in WPS 5th grade social studies curricula. In March 2023 it was updated to connect to the Current Civil Rights Unit
